Make-A-Wish
I began my journey as a volunteer for Make-A-Wish in 2002, and have since been involved with 11 wishes. Being part of the magic of granting a wish is one of the most joyful and rewarding experiences I have ever known. I am inspired by the program's amazing children and their families, and honored to be part of the efforts to make their wishes come true.
As much thanks and appreciation that I get from those that I am helping, it doesn't compare to the wonderful feeling I have inside, knowing I've made a difference in someone's life.
2010 Make-A-Wish Fundraiser
January 2010 I set the intention to raise $5,000.00 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Maine (the amount the foundation spends on one wish.) The wishes granted by the Make-A-Wish foundation are phenomenal. They offer each wish child and their family a little window of peace and happiness in the middle of overwhelming uncertainty, treatment and worry.
When I took on this project, I knew it was going to be big and challenging! I felt strongly about putting it out there and letting others step in to help, as most people want to contribute and make a difference.
I decided to share my vision with a group of local businesswomen who I am involved with, Women Out Working (WOW) and they agreed to join me on my mission. Together, we sponsored a Make-A-Wish fundraiser called A Night to Make Wishes Come True at the Woodfords Club in Portland.
And WOW did we make it happen!
We raised $7600.00 - far exceeding our goal!
We had over 200 people come through the doors. And, as a result of our efforts, a new wish child will see his or her wish come true.
However, our success isn't just measured in the money we raised. The true value was reflected in the compelling and powerful stories that my wish child Amber and her family shared with us that special night. We learned that a wish is not just about going on a special trip to Disney World - A wish is about so much more than that. A wish is pure joy. A wish is a memory that will last a lifetime. A wish is good medicine.
